Sector trade bodies support Courtauld 2

Courtauld Commitment 2 has received widespread industry support from organisations such as the British Retail Consortium (BRC), Food and Drink Federation (FDF) and Incpen.

The second phase of the Courtauld Commitment has launched today with 28 signatories and a target to cut the carbon impact of packaging by 10% by 2012.

Incpen director Jane Bickerstaffe described CC2 as a step towards industry and Wrap getting a better understanding of the complexity of supply chains.

"We hope it will lead to real, holistic, science-based decisions in government, not decisions based on single factors such as carbon or packaging reduction," she said.

BRC director general Stephen Robertson welcomed the more sophisticated approach in setting targets to reduce waste and the resulting carbon emissions. "Retailers will continue to tackle the carbon impacts of packaging and waste in their supply chain to help WRAP meet their ambitious new targets," he said.

The FDF commended Wrap for providing a clear focus look more widely at impacts across the supply chain.

We are delighted with the progress made by our members in reducing pack, product and food waste within the framework of the original Courtauld Commitment. We agree with WRAP that it is time to build on this success," said FDF director general Melanie Leech.

David Gordon, director of industry development at grocery sector research firm IGD, said: "Retailers and manufacturers are already leading the way and have worked with WRAP to achieve zero growth in grocery packaging - despite a growing UK population."
