Facebook campaigners win battle to bring back dry cider

Gaymer Cider Company has bowed to pressure to bring back its Dry Blackthorn cider after dumping it for a sweeter version last year.

Customer research that Gaymer carried out before the launch of the new product showed that people preferred the new sweeter taste and sales have grown by four per cent.

However, cider drinkers across Bristol and the South West felt alienated and campaigned hard using Facebook to get their favourite tipple back.

Now Gaymer has backed down and said it will make the original draught Dry Blackthorn recipe available again from March 26.

Gaymer broke the news first to the Facebook campaigners in a private meeting in Bristol on Tuesday and said the news was met with spontaneous applause.

Gaymer Cider Company managing director Peter Spencer said: “We underestimated the passion people in the South West have for Dry Blackthorn and have been bowled over by their determination to get their favourite cider back.

"We have listened to these supporters and it’s their successful campaigning which has brought Dry Blackthorn back.”

Last September, Gaymers tried to win opponents over with £100 pool or darts kit vouchers being made available to licensees who promoted the Blackthorn brand for three months.
